Is a vote for the Libertarian party candidate a wasted vote? After all, since the Libertarian party is such a minority, it is clear that a Libertarian will NOT be elected president. I want my vote to count.
You only get ONE vote. As does everyone else. You are only 1 person out of 122,280,899 people. Thats how many people voted in the 2004 presidential election. In the 2000 presidential election there were 186,366,000 citizens over 18 years of age. 129,549,000 registered to vote and 110,286,000 actually voted. One hundred and ten million is a lot of votes and you only get one. How much is that really worth? If your state is one of the "battleground" states whose electoral votes could go either way, it could be really important. These states could be swayed by just a few votes either way. In other states like here in Texas (where I live) President George W Bush won by a landslide and there is no threat that a small population of voters could change that.
However you vote, it does send a message to the government. All political parties really do look at voter trends and analyze what they need to do to perform better in the next election.
What message are you sending? Remember, the people who count the votes can't know what you are thinking. The only thing the analysts see is who you voted for. If you voted for candidate A because you hate candidate B more than you hate candidate A then it looks like you like candidate A when the truth is you hate him or her.
What are votes for? To tell the government whom you want to represent you. If you vote for a Republican or Democrat because you believe one of them has a better chance to win, then you are right. Vote for them and they will win. If you vote for a Libertarian candidate because you think that they are the best person to have in office, then you are doing the right thing. Send a message to Washington that Enough is Enough! We want a change. Get away from a bloated government that has it's hands in our personal lives and pockets.
Your vote counts! Every vote counts. That is exactly why, if you agree with the Libertarian platform, that you should vote for Libertarian candidates. It is imperative that we vote for the candidate that we think will be best for the country. If that candidate doesn't win then you will know that you did the right thing. Voting for someone just because you think that they have a better chance only helps keep the current system running as the Democrats and Republicans want it. They don't want to have to compete with a third party. You see, the Democrats and Republicans, despite the rhetoric, are really on the same side on many of the more important issues facing our government and our freedoms today.

In short, I don't know. Our government has made themselves so big and powerful beyond what the constitution calls for that it may be un-stoppable. That will be a real shame.
What will it take to achieve critical mass where the people can make a change? Right now I feel most people are like sheep. As long as their favorite TV show is on everything is fine. People need to get angry over how the government is acting. I fear that it will take a national tragedy for our people to wake up and smell the coffee. By then, will the government have the audacity to just outlaw dissenting views? Will they just throw you in jail for suggesting that things in Washington are not acceptable? Of course not! Or could they. Already our government is trampling our rights and ignoring the Constitution on a level never seen before. What is there to protect us when the government has grown to the point where their arrogance exceeds the level that it would take to be more controlling in the face of the Constitution?
